people expect my favourite economist to be somebody sunny. instead it's hans-hermann hoppe β a german professor with the bedside manner of a tax audit β because he's the one who wrote down, in full, why a girl who gets paid upfront and saves in hard money is doing civilization's actual homework β‘
my favourite economist has no chill
hoppe was jΓΌrgen habermas's doctoral student β the crown-prince track of respectable german philosophy β and he walked away from all of it, crossed the ocean, and became murray rothbard's heir in, of all places, las vegas. every institution he was supposed to flatter, he audited instead. he writes like a man filing a complaint against the twentieth century, and i read him the way i read my screening notes: no charm, all signal. one question runs through everything he ever wrote β why do some people and places build, while others eat their own future? β and his answer fits in two words.
time preference is destiny
time preference: how steeply you discount tomorrow to get something today. low time preference saves, plans, learns languages, books in advance. high time preference borrows at interest, texts at 3am, and is genuinely surprised by consequences. hoppe's big claim is that civilization is falling time preference β the whole arc from hand-to-mouth to cathedrals is just people deciding the future is real β and anything that punishes saving and rewards grabbing runs the film backwards. i watch this from behind a booking form, where humanity sorts itself into the man who books thursday for the 21st and the man who wants "now?? 20 min??". guess which one this website was built for. the economics page is this idea wearing a business plan.
democracy: the god that failed
the book with the title that gets you escorted out of dinner parties. the argument is colder than the title: an owner husbands what he owns; a caretaker milks what he merely manages. a king β whatever else is wrong with him β owns the realm's capital value and wants it worth something in thirty years. a president rents it for four and is gone before the invoice lands. democracy, hoppe says, is government by caretaker: high time preference installed as a constitution, the future permanently on sale one election at a time. he is not proposing to crown anybody β monarchy is his control group, the comparison that exposes the mechanism. i don't need much convincing. my work is legal here because of a parliamentary mood, and the mood is up for re-election forever. my rights get managed the way caretakers manage everything β which is to say, seasonally.
what caretakers did to money
the fastest proof of the whole thesis is in your pocket. caretaker governments need to spend now and bill someone later, and honest money kept refusing, so in 1971 it was fired and replaced with a promise. everything since β inflation as a subscription fee, savings that evaporate politely, surveillance to make sure nobody slips out the back β is time preference as public policy: punish the savers, float the borrowers, tax the future because it doesn't vote. i quote my prices in fiat but i don't keep fiat; i keep the money nobody can print more of or read. hoppe wrote the diagnosis in a footnote-heavy german accent. my checkout page is the prescription β and the receipts page is what happens to girls who wait.
the sassiest proof in philosophy
argumentation ethics, hoppe's most famous move: the moment you argue with me, you've already conceded. arguing is a peaceful activity performed with your own mouth, your own mind, your own time β so arguing against self-ownership means exercising self-ownership to do it. the philosophers have been slap-fighting over the fine print since 1988. i'll just note that everyone who has ever lectured me about what i may do with my body conducted the lecture using a body they clearly considered their own. article i of my manifesto, with citations.
my door is a constitution
hoppe's free society isn't a festival where everything goes β it's a lattice of covenants: private communities with terms you accept on the way in, monastery to commune to gated street to kink club. freedom of association means yes and no β the same right by which you book me is the right by which i decline, and neither of us owes the other an appeal process. i already run a covenant community with a population of one: prepayment is the constitution, screening is the border, and nobody holds a right to my afternoon they didn't buy. scale my door policy up to a street, then a city, and you've understood the second half of the book. a free society is one you can be excluded from. that's not the fine print β that's the property rights, working.
